I have always loved these type of floors. Big planks…painted white…rustic with character. I am pricing out wood floors for my master bedroom and would love to have them painted white. Although, I have a feeling by the time I get to the painting bit I will have met my budget. But I think I could be happy living with the natural wood, like the last image, for a year or so and then painting white.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for this type of look? Type of wood. Painting suggestions. Do’s or dont’s. Would love your input!

Trina, these images are just delightful! Ness over @ Marley&Lockyer did a post on painting the wooden floors white in her very old cottage in Tasmania last year sometime. She described the process really well, not complicated, but full of useful tips for the novice. The results in her bedroom looks outstanding.

No tips as of yet…still learning myself. I too adore white floors but I would too scared of becoming a slave to cleaning them. Had to write and say, I LOVE the last picture! A-M xx

Hi Trina, we painted all the floors in our previous apartment white (see pics here http://www.flickr.com/photos/samandgrant/sets/72157603628090702/, and we loved it. It made a huge difference to the light in the apartment which was really important during the winter months! But I would recommend getting a hard wearing paint that is meant for floors, and do be prepared for the cleaning, the dust is much more noticeable on white floors!
Cheers,
Sam

Love the painted floors! I pulled up the carpet in my spare bedroom and painted the floor in a diamond pattern… I would suggest using a good primer and then buy porch paint. You just get it at Home Depot with the regular paints (you can have it tinted whatever color you want). It is designed to hold up to foot traffic. Please post pics once you’ve done it – I’d love to see them!

Hey, speaking of budget, I thought I would mention that around here (NC) it is quite popular to use re-furbished barn wood for wide plank floors. May come out cheaper. Its worth a shot.

I like the porch paint tip. We pulled carpet up from the back rooms of our place and noted it made the house a lot more noisy. There’s still carpet in the front but it needs to be replaced and we still haven’t decided. The floor boards were always supposed to be covered and the builer – 40 years ago – allowed the boards to become covered with paint and there are knot holes and nails still sticking up (see here: http://katiecrackernuts.blogspot.com/2009/01/turn-over-new-leaf.html) We need to punch the nails down and then have it properly sanded and then … hmmm, I like the idea of the white boards and would allow for floor traffic to scuff it, but we noted just in vaccumming our rough boards we needed to buy a special attachment to not scratch the boards. It just seemed to go on and on. I am almost to the point of considering covering them again. I am glad we lived with what was there for a bit because we didn’t expect the noise factor, nor the little quirks of caring for them. I still love boards, but am much the wiser for not diving in and leaving them a bit “unprecious” for a few years.

I am a huge adorer of the painted floors, though I have learned that LOTS of people are scared to death of them. So I was excited to read your love for them as well.
You just need a good prime, paint and then sealer and your ready to go:)

You can get unfinished wide plank white pine flooring through Lumber Liquidators for a little over a dollar a square foot. We're going to be able to do our whole house for 3,500 dollars!! You should check them out at their website.
