i absolutely adore open shelving in the kitchen.  clearly this is not a new trend, but it is one i can’t get out of my head.  if there is one room i could change in my home it would be my kitchen.  i love my home and my kitchen is fabulous…it’s just not “me.”  so when i dream of updates, my mind always dances around a bright white kitchen with some open shelving.  i get a bit carried away on my kitchen pinterest board.

if you are making any updates to your kitchen, have you thought of using the lack shelves from IKEA?  they are shown in all the images in this post.  its a super inexpensive way to work in floating shelves into your kitchen or any room, for that matter.  i have a set in my home, adorned by super heroes, in the boys room.   and, i love all of the lack goodness here (i love the bottom image with the books).

do you lack?  and, do you love the open / floating shelving look as much as me?

one little shelf is pretty and functional to this open artsy loft of a kitchen.

why not hang hooks on the bottom of the shelf to hang all of your little bits.

hanging the shelves across a window is so unique and interesting.

p.s.  this even a darling option for a play kitchen set.

Trina, I have those IKEA shelves in my kitchen, which were just taken down and packed up for our move. I have the black open shelving from IKEA. I keep all my pretty glassware and dishes on them. I have another shelf where I keep staples such as coffee, oatmeal, tea bags, and quinoa in sealed glass jars. I love the look as well.
Have you ever thought of painting your cabinets white? I had the plain, boring honey oak cabinets and I painstakingly painted them white with an antique glaze myself a few years ago. I actually learned how to do it on a blog. I went to Sherwin Williams and got the Greek Isle White paint color and took over 3 weeks to slowly and correctly paint them. I was so scared I was going to ruin them, but they actually turned out great. Even the professional painter that was here last week commented that he liked the antique glaze on them, said I did a good job. I’d say give it a try because I am certainly NO Martha Stewart. If I can do it, I know you can too! :)

sounds so pretty. i can’t bring myself to paint the cabinets. they are cherry wood and i know that if i don’t live here forever, likely, the next person may like the current, more traditional, kitchen that i have. i think that is amazing that you painted your cabinets!!!!! way to go. that takes a lot of patience! your kitchen sounds really pretty! xo . t

I love all of these images and I love the look of open kitchen shelving in general. I just have a fear of how dirty they might get? I cook a LOT. (All meals and snacks for a family of 5.) So I wish I could hear feedback from home cooks who actually have their kitchens set up like this as to whether they end up with residue and such from food prep on their gorgeous shelves and the shelves’ contents.
I’m not talking about flying spatter or anything you’d even notice while it’s happening, but rather that gradual gunk that builds up on areas near a stove. You know?

i would love to know the feedback on this too… chime in, dear readers, if you have any.

my ideal kitchen would be a mix of open shelving and white cabinets :) xo . t

I love open shelving in a kitchen! In our last apartment we had the most hideous brown, 1960’s cabinets. I so much wanted to tear them out and put open shelving in. We were renting though, so no go. But the layout of the apartment was lovely. These pictures are gorgeous!

Love that top image! I’ve had Lack shelves throughout the years… I’d just worry that they were sturdy and secure enough to hold all those breakables!

good point. i def wouldn’t want to put too much weight on them or put anything too precious or irreplaceable up on them! xo . t
