GEZELLIG is a Dutch word that can’t quite be translated into English. The closest word we have is cozy and I’m certain any Dutch person would tell you that that is an incomplete translation. Gezellig can be described as a mood or feeling. A nice atmosphere or a pleasant experience. Some even say it is the heart of Dutch culture. It’s a quaint cafe with friends. It’s a home that is cozy, warm, inviting. It’s togetherness and belonging.

A place can be Gezellig and so can a person.

I translate the word to mean: The soul of a home.

And, what I’m gathering, these days, is that:

The Soul of a home isn’t determined by how it is decorated; It is determined by who and what resides in it.
