I’m still green juicing it, almost daily. But . . . some days, in the afternoons, I crave something sweet. You too?
Yesterday, I went to the dentist and had both sides of mouth drilled (ughh) and was feeling sorry for myself because I thought I surely deserved a milkshake. Luckily, I happened to remember a sweet tooth kind of smoothie that I used to make. A Date Shake.

It’s sweet, filling, and packed with good-for-you ingredients.
Here’s whats in it :
DATE SHAKE SMOOTHIE
1 cup of coconut milk
1 banana
2 medjool dates (pitted)
1 tablespoon of cashew butter (or nut butter of your choice)
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/2 to 1 cup of ice
Toss all ingredients into a high powered blender and blend until smooth.
So simple, and so satisfying.
You can, of course, use almond milk and almond butter or any nut butter or dairy milk substitute of your choice. I want to try flax seed milk, but had coconut milk on hand and it worked great.
When I used to make this shake, I always used almond milk and almond butter, however, I recently discovered I’m sensitive to almonds and perhaps have a mild allergy to them (they give me terrible headaches and I always feel a little itchy after eating them.). Major bummer, because almonds are so good for you. I’ve found, however, that roasted cashew butter has the closest texture and taste to almond butter. It’s so good. If you are interested in trying cashew butter, this brand is my favorite (thus far in my taste testing search). I tried Trader Joe’s, which was cheaper, but didn’t have that really nice roasted effect and I read that they use almonds in their cashew butter. Who knows, maybe the next recipe I share will be for cashew butter…. I’d like to try to make my own.
It’s also good to note that you can use a frozen or fresh banana. I’ve gone both ways. I don’t like super cold smoothies (again headaches0, so yesterday I used a regular banana. But, you should know that a frozen banana definitely gives it a more milkshake like consistency.
This shake is great for breakfast as it contains protein, good fats and potassium, and it’s a great pick me up for an afternoon slump.
